What Advanced Roadmaps is genuinely good at

Credit where it's due. Advanced Roadmaps is a strong roadmap tool: it lets you schedule work across many teams on one visual timeline, map dependencies, model scenarios, and roll initiatives up into a cross-team view — all native to Jira, no extra app to install. If your primary need is a rich, multi-team roadmap timeline that lives inside Jira Premium, it does that job well.

Project Commander plans across teams too

Worth being clear up front, because it's easy to assume otherwise: Project Commander isn't only a single-project tool. It rolls a whole portfolio into one view — a row per project with health, forecast, and target, plus a program rollup — surfaces cross-project dependencies and shared capacity across teams, and forecasts the program as one system (each project on its own team's capacity, the program finishing with its slowest project). So cross-team planning isn't the dividing line. Where Project Commander goes further than a roadmap is in answering "will this plan hold?":

1. A probability and a range, not a single date

Advanced Roadmaps gives you a scheduled date. Project Commander runs a Monte Carlo simulation over your plan and returns the odds of hitting the target plus a likely-finish range — because a single date with no confidence attached is the kind of false precision that burns you in front of a stakeholder. (Native Advanced Roadmaps doesn't do probabilistic forecasting; teams that want it usually bolt on a separate Monte Carlo app.)

2. Real per-person capacity, including time off

This is the big one. Advanced Roadmaps handles capacity at the team level — set the team's throughput and it applies across the plan. It doesn't let you adjust for an individual's PTO, holidays, or partial availability. Project Commander plans capacity per person: each member's hours or points, minus their time off and company holidays, so the forecast reflects the team you'll actually have, not an average.

3. Scope creep you can actually see

4. A straight "deliverable or overcommitted" verdict

That "is this achievable?" verdict is the whole point, and it's not what a roadmap timeline is designed to give you.

Which should you use?

If your primary need is a native, enterprise-grade cross-team roadmap timeline and you're already on Jira Premium, Advanced Roadmaps is a strong home for it. If you want to know whether the plan is feasible — real per-person capacity against demand, a forecast with odds, scope creep caught early, a clear on-time verdict — with portfolio planning included and no Premium tier required, that's what Project Commander adds. They're not mutually exclusive: plenty of teams keep the roadmap where it is and use Project Commander to pressure-test whether it actually holds.
